Grammar For Grownups

Grammar for Grownups Quiz #47

About Wimpy Verbs...

Would you rather get a promotion or accept a promotion? Would you rather have a new love affair or delve into a new love affair? Would you rather go for a walk or stroll off for a walk? The difference appears most obviously in writing when you learn to use active verbs and leave the wimpy ones at home. Wimpy verbs? Try do, go, take, put, make, get, give, have, for instance.

The following verbs in red show multiple definitions (count them) in your dictionary. Trim them down to more specific meanings. Can you find a better verb?

1. For once, put a smile on your face.

2. Can you take a minute to talk with me?

3. I'd love to do this project with you.

4. Get your feet off my desk.

5. We can go to the zoo on Saturday.

6. Do you have some cash for the admission?
