Grammar for Grownups QuizThe mysterious word "that" has a couple of uses. But mostly you don't need it. The best advice I ever heard was from an editor who told me I overused "that" and to leave it out unless I really needed it. Now, with computers, you can SEARCH or FIND the "thats" in your work. Read the sentence without it; most of the time you won't need "that." Choose from the following sentences the thats that can be left out: 1. She holds the record that I held last year. 2. Don't you remember that I told you that before? 3. Of course, now that you mention it. 4. You have the worst memory that I ever came upon. 5. Now that is a cruel statement. 6.
